Why psychotherapy?

One of the main aims of psychotherapy is to explore causes of emotional distress, and in doing so to locate and increase the individual’s sense of his or her own well-being.

Psychotherapy  is also a tool for in-depth exploration of who we are, what motivates us and what prevents us achieving our fullest potential.

People seek psychotherapy for a variety of different reasons. It could be that you are experiencing some of the following:

  • Anxiety or panic attacks
  • Phobias such as social phobia
  • Issues associated with anger
  • De-motivation, helplessness or hopelessness
  • Difficult life situation such an end of an important relationship or bereavement
  • Debilitating physical symptoms linked to emotional distress

The psycho-somatic symptoms, when present, can be very strong and debilitating, and affect the quality of your everyday life.

Or perhaps  what you experience could manifest in more subtle ways and you might have a nagging sense of being discontented with life, feel cut-off and alienated form people, or be looking for meaning in your life.

Whatever your reason for starting psychotherapy, by bringing focused attention to your thoughts, feelings and body states, you can become aware of the way past experiences have coloured your perception of the present, and achieve greater fulfilment and a fuller engagement in life.
